Professor Siddharthan Chandran, MacDonald Professor of Neurology, University of Edinburgh
Professor Charles ffrench-Constant, Professor of Multiple Sclerosis Research, University of Edinburgh

Stem cells offer genuine possibilities for the discovery and delivery of new treatments in neurodegenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone disease, Parkinson's disease and even Alzheimer's disease. But how much of the present excitement is merely hype? What is actually realistic, and over what time scale? Using these diseases as examples we will describe the "state of the art" as to the biology and application of stem cells in neurology. Professor Siddharthan Chandran and Professor Charles ffrench-Constant hope to convey the excitement of the neuroscience community about the opportunities offered by this new field while at the same time presenting a realistic picture of the difficulties that face efforts to take stem cells from bench to bedside.
