getBRAINY Workshops for Schools

getBRAINY stands for get Busy Running Activities Inspiring Neuroscience in the Young and this is exactly what these workshops do! Created for taking into schools, these workshops are a new venture for Edinburgh Neuroscience and we hope it will build into a series on different neuroscience-related topics and aimed at different age groups. The first workshop, getCONNECTED, visited 4 schools in October 2008 and was enjoyed by about 240 Primary 7 pupils in Edinburgh.

getCONNECTED - This one-hour workshop launched our getBRAINY series in October2008. It is aimed at Primary 7 school children and focusses on nerve connections in the brain. It takes you from chemical communication between brain nerve cells to the pruning back of connections that takes place as you mature from a child into an adult. This workshop is a must for every child that is about to go through adolescence - 'just why is he behaving like that now he is 13?' This workshop aims to tell you!
Suitable for: Primary 7 pupils

getREMEMBERING - aimed at High School students, this workshop covers the mechanisms by which the brain stores and retireves information. How can this go wrong and are computers advancing to the point where artificial intelligence software can replace your brain? Scary stuff!
suitable for: older High School pupils

getEMOTIONAL - How can we use brain imaging techniques to explore our emotions? Edinburgh Neuroscience, in collaboration with the Scottish Imaging Network - a Platform for Scientific Excellence (SiNAPSE) developed this workshop as a drop-in session at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh for National Science and Engineering Week 2009 and it was so successful it has now been taken across Scotland!

New* getBALANCED - being developed by the Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology, this workshop can be aimed at pupils from primary schools up to S3 level. Through hands-on activities and measurements, pupils will examine the balance and symmetry of the body and how this can provide information about your brain!

This workshop is now FULL!
We are running getBALANCED 19 times in 6 difference schools between Nov 2009 and Feb 2010 and we have a waiting list of 2 schools. We can't manage any more - sorry!
