A reproducibility crisis

Professor Malcolm Macleod (Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences) and Jeffrey Mogil (McGill University, Montreal) have proposed a new approach to animal studies of disease therapies or preventions that calls for independent, statistically rigorous confirmation of a researcher's central hypothesis before publication - a formal, rigorous and robust preclinical trial. In this Nature Comment paper, it is proposed that there would be reduced waste of resources in following up 'weak papers', which would in turn help get drugs to market more quickly.
