Clinical scholarships

The clinical scholarships are for outstanding clinically qualified candidates who aspire to be a leading clinical academic.

The scheme offers a 3-year scholarship leading to a PhD. Scholars will conduct an original research project in a world-class research environment, with mentoring and transferable skills training to equip them to compete as independent investigators in area of translational or clinical research.

As well as scientific mentorship, scholars will benefit from career and pastoral support provided by clinical PIs; just under half of the PIs of the UK DRI at Edinburgh are clinicians. Edinburgh has a long and highly successful track record of mentoring early-career clinical researchers, with several mentees now reaching Professorship and holding senior fellowships from either the Medical Research Council or Wellcome Trust. Notably, the scholars will be closely associated with the members and activities of the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic — the University’s clinical research facility for neurodegenerative conditions, whose mission includes excellence in clinical academic training.

Scholars will be given an honorary contract with NHS Lothian and have the opportunity to continue limited clinical activity and training during the PhD (typically one session per week).

The scholarship comprises three years funding including:

  • Salaried employment as a staff member at the University of Edinburgh (including national insurance and superannuation), on the clinical AMN2 scale at a point commensurate with experience
  • University of Edinburgh PhD tuition fees
  • A generous allowance for research consumables and travel for conference attendance
