University of Edinburgh: RS Macdonald Seedcorn Fund
The RS Macdonald Seedcorn Fund has been created to support the development of neuroscience research projects and collaboration at the University of Edinburgh. Projects that enhance links between the philanthropically funded centres are especially welcome. This fund has been established as a result of an award from the RS Macdonald Trust. In 2017 and 2018 we awarded £75,000 per year. We are awaiting information on whether funding will be renewed for 2019 onward.
University of Edinburgh: Institutional Strategic Support Fund (ISSF3)
The Wellcome Trust and the University of Edinburgh have agreed that ISSF3 awards should be in the following strategic areas and applications for an award should fit within one or more of these: Support for early career researchers; Support for senior investigators and infrastructure; Support for interdisciplinary projects; Equality and diversity support; Support for commercial translation; Support for open research; Support for public engagement; Support for international/UK inter-institutional collaboration and global challenges research. Applications must be submitted via your research institute. Deadline: Friday 29th March 2019 and November 2019 (date tbc)
Academy of Medical Sciences
Springboard Awards Springboard Awards provide small grants to support basic biomedical scientists as they develop their independent research careers. The scheme is a collaboration between the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Wellcome Trust. Funding up to £100,000. Deadlines: expected May 2019
Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers This scheme provides small grants to enable clinical lecturers to pursue their research work, gather preliminary data and strengthen their applications for longer-term fellowships and funding. Deadline: March and September every year
Alzheimer's Research UK
Pilot projects The Pilot project scheme provides funds for small innovative research projects and pilot studies. Up to £50,000 is available for up to 2 years. Deadline: 20 March 2019
Equipment The Equipment grant scheme provides funds for scientific equipment (flexibly defined). Applications for joint funding for even larger pieces are accepted. Up to £100,000 is available. Deadline: expected November 2019
Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour: Small Research Grant
These support pilot and small-scale projects in all areas of animal behaviour that are unlikely to attract funding from alternative sources. Grants are worth up to £7,500 and may cover equipment, research expenses, salaries, travel and subsistence. Note that applicants must be postdoc and above, must be a member of ASAB. Deadlines: 01 Feb, 01 June, 01 October each year
British Neuropathological Society: Small Grant Scheme
This supports projects that will advance neuropathology. Applications will be considered for research projects, including both substantive and pilot projects, and projects related to education/training in Neuropathology. A maximum of £5,000 is available per project. Note applicants can be PhD students or Undergraduates. Applicant or PI must be a member of the BNS. Deadlines: March and September each year
Carnegie Trust: Research Incentive Grants
The purpose of the Research Incentive Grants (RIG) scheme is to make it possible for an Early Career Researcher to undertake, as the Principal Investigator, a short research project, either of a stand-alone nature or in the form of an initial study that could be expected to lead to a more extensive project. The principal criterion for the award of a RIG is that the planned research is of excellent quality, will enable the principal investigator to develop a new project or line of research and is likely to lead to high quality outputs and outcomes. Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland: Research Development Grants
The focus of the CHSS Research Development Grants is scoping, project development and small tests of change. Ideally, they will provide the opportunity to explore and investigate the possibilities and feasibility of larger future projects. In line with our charitable objectives, projects must primarily cover chest conditions, heart conditions, or stroke. Deadline: estimated october 2019
Epilepsy Research UK: Project Grants and Pilot Grants in Epilepsy
Applications are invited for grants of up to £200,000, to support a research project lasting a maximum of three years. Applications for smaller sums to support the purchase of equipment, student fees and salaries for non-tenured principal applicants are also welcome.
Furthermore, applications are invited for grants of up to £30,000 to support pilot or start-up studies lasting no more than two years. These can include research costs, equipment and salaries; however, there must be a clear emphasis on the generation of new/preliminary data. The project must be a novel piece of research and not part of a project or fellowship already funded by Epilepsy Research UK or any other funding body. Deadline: expected september 2019
European Association of Social Psychology: Seedcorn Research Grants
The aim of the 'seedcorn' research grants is to assist researchers in developing new research projects. In particular, ‘seedcorn’ grants are intended to support preliminary research which may assist the holder to subsequently obtain larger scale funding from other sources (for full members). In addition, the seedcorn grant may also be used for supporting research that was designed at EASP summer schools (in this case, applicants should be a group of summer school participants). National Institute of Health: BRAIN initiative
A total of 10 institutes and offices of the National Institutes of Health invite applications for their BRAIN initiative – theories, models and methods for analysis of complex data from the brain funding opportunity. This supports new theories, computational models, and statistical tools to derive understanding of brain function from complex neuroscience data. Deadline: see website
Parkinson's UK: Small grants scheme
This supports small-scale research projects and pilot studies focused on finding a cure and better treatments for Parkinson’s. Grants are worth up to £50,000 for up to two years. Principal applicants should hold employment contracts that extend beyond the period of the grant. Deadlines: 23 January 2019, 24 April 2019, 25 September 2019
The Royal Society
Research Grants: These provide seed-corn funding for early-career scientists for research within the society’s remit in the life and physical sciences. The aim is to increase the availability of specialised equipment and consumables for research, and to support essential field research. Deadline: likely December 2018
Wolfson Laboratory Refurbishment Grant: This scheme is for scientists in the UK who want to refurbish or renovate their research laboratories. Deadline: scheme curently closed.
Tenovus Scotland: Small Pilot Grants
These grants, up to £20,000 dependent on Region, support pump priming research studies of up to 18 months’ duration. Preference is given to: Preliminary pump priming studies, which are thought likely to lead to subsequent funding from major grant-giving bodies; Innovative patient-related projects; Early career investigators; Applications from investigators lacking other substantive support in the early stages of a new project; Recent recruits; New collaborations between established investigators. Biomedical Resource and Technology Development Grants These grants are for researchers who want to establish or maintain resources or technology for the benefit of the wider scientific community. Deadline: currently unavailable
Innovator Awards These awards support researchers who are transforming great ideas into healthcare innovations that could have a significant impact on human health. Up to £500,000, or up to £750,000 for multidisciplinary collaborations. Deadlines: apply any time
Multi-user Equipment Grants These grants provide support for multi-user items of equipment. Funding between £100,000 and £1 million. Deadline: currently unavailable.
Open Research Fund This funding supports researchers to develop and test innovative ways of making health research open, accessible and reusable. Up to £50,000. Deadline: expected August 2019
Seed Awards in Science Seed Awards help researchers develop novel ideas that will go on to form part of larger grant applications to Wellcome or elsewhere. Funding up to £100,000. Deadline: 11 March 2019 (this is the final round of funding and the scheme will close after this deadline)
