Epilepsy Research UK Edinburgh Doctoral Training Centre

Training future research leaders in childhood-onset epilepsies

Studentships are available for outstanding postgraduate candidates to join our novel Epilepsy Research UK funded doctoral training centre (ERUK-DTC) focused on research into Childhood-onset Epilepsies.

Each of the fully-funded three year studentships provide full tuition fees, an enhanced stipend (£20,000 per year), annual travel and conference allowance, and support towards research consumable costs.

Research on childhood-onset epilepsies is a key priority of a range of organisations including the International League Against Epilepsy and the World Health Organisation.  There is a growing need to capacity build a future epilepsy research workforce whilst directly contributing to life changing, life-saving research.

In addition to your specific research project, you will have a tailored programme including taught sessions in fundamental aspects of brain communication, model systems, clinical epilepsy, and clinical trials, alongside training in public engagement, visits to clinics and talks with patients. Thus, you will have some experience of the whole discovery journey from basic science to treatment, with the patient viewpoint integrated throughout.

As a graduate from the ERUK-DTC, you will be ideally placed to pursue international quality research in childhood-onset epilepsies in a highly collaborative, cross-disciplinary manner. You will:

  • be encouraged to become an innovative, creative thinker,
  • be trained in a range of state-of-the-art techniques
  • gain insight into the needs and thoughts of patients and their families,
  • become equipped to engage with audiences within and beyond the research world.

As such, as a graduate from the ERUK-DTC, you will be ideally placed to be part of the next generation of scientific research leaders in childhood-onset epilepsies.
